In Loving Memory

Cullen Franklin Calame

October 17, 1953 - December 7, 2024

Cullen Franklin Calame, 71, of Decatur, Texas, passed away on December 7, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 17, 1953, in Fairfield, Texas, Cullen lived a life defined by adventure, hard work, and an enduring love for his family and friends.

Cullen was the beloved husband of Lori (Oakes) Calame, with whom he shared life with for 39 wonderful years. Together, they raised three children: Ashley Scobee (Jared), Nicole Habern (Matthew), and Ross Calame (Sloane). Cullen’s greatest joy came from being a devoted father and grandfather to his seven grandchildren: Rhett Scobee, Sandra Scobee, Hudson Habern, Dawson Calame, Matilda Calame, Joe Calame, and Logan Calame.

A true cowboy at heart, Cullen embraced the rugged lifestyle of the Texas rodeo. He was a proud graduate of Richland High School, he attended Sam Houston State University on a rodeo scholarship, showcasing his talent and passion for bull riding. That passion ultimately led him to create and be the Founder of the Texas Bucking Bull Association, an organization that continues to honor Cullen’s legacy and deep love for the sport.

Cullen’s life was deeply rooted in his faith. His devotion to the Lord guided his actions and inspired his family and friends. He often found peace and reflection while hunting in God’s country, a pursuit that brought him closer to both his faith and the land he loved. Cullen also had a deep appreciation for Texas history and heritage, which shaped his identity and fueled his pride in being a Texan.

Beyond his love for rodeo, Cullen was a man of boundless talents and entrepreneurial spirit. He worked on offshore oil rigs before creating several successful businesses, including American Water Well and Calame Oil Company, founded in Wortham, Texas. He and Lori also owned and managed Denton Creek Farms; an equine and bovine staple of North Texas.

Cullen’s life was filled with many remarkable experiences, but his most cherished roles were being a father, Papaw, and friend. He was always there to help without question, willing to do anything for anyone. The love, wisdom, and values he shared with his children, grandchildren, and friends will continue to guide them, ensuring his remarkable spirit and legacy live on.

Cullen was the son of the late Franklin D. Calame and LaRee Overstreet. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Cevin Calame. He is survived by his sister Carol Wall (Danny), loving wife Lori, their three children, and seven grandchildren. Cullen's legacy will live on in the wisdom he bestowed, the values he shared, and his unwavering love for his family and friends.

“If God didn’t love Texas, he wouldn’t of made the sunset burnt orange.”
